Seaside Holidays

The coastline of China extends well over 18,000 km and is punctuated by exquisite beaches and seaside resorts, many of them the finest in the world.
 
A. Hainan
The tropical island of Hainan is the beach capital of China. Neither hot in summer nor cold in winter, Hainan is a paradise-by-the-sea made up of blue skies, crystal clear waters, bright sunshine and an abundance of fresh air.

Sanya, theresort city in the south of the island, is often called the ‘Hawaii of China’. Like Hawaii, Sanya has long stretches of white sandy beaches and palm tree-lined boulevards.

Once you reach Hainan, you can hop from beach to beach. There’sYalong Bay in the east with 7km of white sand; the Luhuitou Peninsula5 km southwest of Sanya; and Dadonghai Beach to its southeast.

Getting there: Two international airports – at Sanya and Haikou – serve the island of Hainan. Both airports are well connected to most major cities in China. Flight durations:
  • Guangzhou-Sanya:1 hour 30 minutes
  • Beijing-Sanya: 3hours 50minutes
  • Shanghai-Sanya: 3hours 10minutes
  • Kunming-Sanya: 1 hour 35minutes
  • Kunming-Haikou: 1hour 50minutes
  • Guangzhou-Haikou:1 hour)

B. Beihai
The beautiful beaches of Beihai in southwest China (Guangxi Province)are far less crowded than the ones in Hainan.

The 2,000-year-old city offers the sun and sea at the Silver Beach, a short distance away, along with old-world hospitality and architecture.

Getting there: Beihai is easy to reach by air. Flight durations:

  • FromGuangzhou:1hour 20minutes
  • From Beijing: 3hours 30minutes
  • From Shanghai:2hours 50minutes
  • From Kolkata, take a flight to Kunming and then the connection to Shenzen/Guangzhou
  • From Bangalurutake a flight to Chegndu and then the connection to Beihai.
 
C. Dalian
Dalian, the secondlargest city in the province of Liaoning in the northwest, offers the best of metropolitan life in a setting of sea and sand. Main attractions:

  • Tiger Beach where you are greeted by a massive marble statue of a tiger
  • The amusement park and polar aquarium at Tiger Beach
  • The tranquil tides of BangchuidaoJugqu, another famous beach in the vicinity
  • Fujiazhuang Beach for swimming on a budget
  • Golden Stone Beach, 60km north of Dalian, for sunbathing, swimming and even golf at a world-class course
Getting there: Direct air connections with Beijing and Shanghai. Flight duration:
  • From Beijing:1 hour
  • From Shanghai: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • From Kunming via Changzhou: Approximately 5 hours
  • From Chengdu via Xi’an: 4 hours 20 minutes
 
D. Shandong

In the coastal province of Shandong stands thecity of Qingdao, renowned for its curious mixture of Chinese and Bavarian architecture and six beaches, among them the largest bathing beach in Asia. The city played host to the sailing events of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

Main attractions:

  • The No 6 Bathing Beach close to the train station
  • The No 2 Bathing Beach in east Qingdao, for peace and quiet in clean waters
  • The boat ride to Huang Dao or Yellow Island that offers the very best swimming conditions in the city of beaches
  • The International Beach on the golden coastline of Weihai, a neighbouring city

Getting there: Air connections with most cities in China make Qingdao easy to reach. Flight durations:

  • From Beijing: 1hour 20minutes
  • From Shanghai:1hour 20minutes
  • From Guangzhou: 2hours 25minutes
  • From Kunming:3hours
  • From Chengdu: 2hours 20minutes
There are regular flights from Delhi to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mumbai has air connections with Shanghai; Bangaluru with Chengdu; and Kolkata with Kunming.
 
E. Shenzhen
Some of the best beaches in China are found in the southeast -– in Shenzhen in the province of Guangdong. Also called the ‘garden city’, subtropical Shenzhen presents a unique mix of green and gold, lawns and beaches. Main attractions:

  • The popular beaches of Dameisha and Xiaomeisha
  • Xichong Beach (near Da Peng Bay), the longest beach in the province
  • Lovers' Island, thequiet honeymoon destination
  • Guangdong for diving
Getting there: Air connections with most cities in China make Shenzheneasy to reach. Flight durations:
  • From Beijing: 3 hours 10minutes
  • From Shanghai:2 hours
  • From Kunming: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • From Chengdu: 2hours 10minutes

F. Fujian
Imagine miles and miles of white sand, punctuated with swaying palm trees. Imagine a coastline of exotic sunbathing and swimming locations every few yards. Imagine a wooden boardwalk that skims the water over the rocky parts of the beach. Fujian is simply ‘paradise for beach buffs’.

Getting there: The airport atXiamen has connections with several cities. Flight durations:

  • From Shanghai: 1hour 30minutes
  • From Kunming: 2 hours 10minutes
  • From Chengdu: 3hours 40minutes
  • From Hong Kong:1hour 10minute

G. Shantou
Experience spring and summer at one go. The Tropic of Cancer passes throughShantou at the southeastcorner of East Asia, facing the Pacific Ocean. The city’s harbour is one of the most important in the world, but for you the attractions lie beyond the harbour, in the surrounding mountains, natural beaches, exotic islands and marine life. The rich seaside resources of Shantou have producedseveral resort villages along the coast.

Getting there: Shantou is easy to reach by air from most cities in China. Flight durations:

  • From Beijing: 2hours 55minutes
  • From Shanghai: 1hour 50minutes
  • From Kunming: 3 hours 20minutes
  • From Chengdu: 4hours
  • From Hong Kong: 55minutes
