Ice and Snow Tours

Winter in certain parts of China is an exhilarating, not-to-be-missed experience. Take your pick from the following winter destinations for the holiday of a lifetime.
 
A. Shenyang
Shenyang in Liaoning Province – the largest city in northeastChina – records sub-zero degree (Celsius) temperatures in winter. Throughout winter, skiing is a major attraction. Threeskiing venues are within easy driving distance from Shenyang:
  1. Northeast Asia Ski Centre at the National Forest Park
  2. The BaiqingzhaiSking Field (for free style runs, U-turns and runs for both beginners and seasonedskiers)
  3. Huishan Mountain ‘Ice and Snow World’ that also has an amusement park for children
The other big attraction is the ‘Ice and Snow Festival’ at Qipan Mountain, just 17 km from downtown Shenyang.

Getting there:Shenyang is well connected by air. Flight durations:
  • From Shanghai:2hours
  • From Guangzhou:3hours 30 minutes
  • From Beijing: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • FromChengdu:3 hours 25 minutes
There are regular flights from Delhi toBeijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mumbai has air connections with Shanghai; and Bangaluru with Chengdu.
 
B. Dalian
Dalian in China's Liaodong Peninsular – known as the ‘Hong Kong of Northern China’ – is a favourite winter tourist destination.

Attractions:
  • The Polar Garden at the Tiger Beach Ocean Parkhas fields of snow created by the most advanced snow machines;a snow-covered castle; sledges pulled by dogs and horses; and performances by penguins and sea lions
  • The Golden Pebble Snow Palace, an ice and snow amusement centre
  • The International Hot-Springs Skiing Field,55 km from the mainland,presents exciting challenges to the professional skier and is a well-known culinary centre
Getting there:Dalian is well connected by air. Flight durations:

  • From Shanghai: 2hours
  • From Guangzhou: 3hours 30 minutes
  • From Beijing: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • From Chengdu: 3 hours 50 minutes
  • From Kunming: 4 hours 10 minutes
There are regular flights from Delhi to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mumbai has air connections with Shanghai; Bangaluru with Chengdu; and Kolkata with Kunming.
 
C. Changchun
In winter, snow-clad Changchun, the capital of Jillin province, takes on a magical fairytale appearance.

Attractions:
  • Changchun Jingyuetan Skiing Field,the centre for snow sports from mid-November to mid-March
  • The South Lake Park where the920,000 sqmlake that turns into a natural skating rink
  • The Lotus Mountain Skiing Field, 35 kmfrom the city, with natural skiing slopes: the venue of international skiing events
Getting there: Changchun is well connected by air with three major cities. Flight durations:
  • From Shanghai: 2hours 20 minutes
  • From Guangzhou: 3hours 50 minutes
  • From Beijing: 1 hour 55 minutes

D. Harbin and its periphery

Harbin has long and cold winters and is famous for its snow carved buildings; icy walls and ice sculptures at every street corner; and its skiing options.

Attractions:

Getting there:Harbin is well connected by air with four major cities. Flight durations:

  • From Shanghai: 2 hours 50 minutes
  • From Guangzhou: 4 hours 10 minutes
  • From Beijing: 2 hours
  • From Kunming: 5 hours 40 minutes
There are regular flights from Delhi to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mumbai has air connections with Shanghai; and Kolkata with Kunming.
 
E. Inner Mongolia
The exceptionalcharm of Inner Mongolia stretches fromthe bright, clear skies to the endless tracts of snow-covered grassland swept by strong westerly winds.

Attractions:
  • Scenic areas and snow festivals at HulunBuir and its periphery
  • Snow-clad villas and ski slopes at the Phoenix Mountain Villa on the southwest of Yakeshi city
  • Hailar East Hill Amusement Park with its ski slopes, 300mlong chair lift,skating rinks, snow motorcycles and the Mongolian Custom Garden
  • The Arxan Mountain TaiweiFeild
  • The Inner Mongolia Winter Nadam Fair and the Arxan Ice and Snow Festival
Getting there: Hailar Airportat the east mountain in HulunBuir has connections to both Beijing and Dalian. Flight durations:
  • From Beijing: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • From Dalian: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • From Kunming to Dalian: 4 hours 30 minutes
To reach Inner Mongolia from Kolkata, take a flight to Kunming and the connection from Kunming to Dalian and then from Dalian to Hailar
 
F. Urumqi and its periphery
Urumqi and Altayin north Xinjiang are utopias carved in ice and snow.

Attractions:
  • Ice sculptures and camel trains
  • In Urumqi:Tianshan Mountain Scenic area, the Snow Lotus Skiing Field, the Mountain Golf Course and the Silk Road International Ski Resort
  • In Altay: Ice and Snow World, General Mountain Skiing Field and the Snow Custom Festival
Getting there: Urumqi is connected tomost cities in China. Flight durations:
  • From Shanghai: 5hours 10 minutes
  • From Guangzhou: 5hours 5 minutes
  • From Beijing: 4 hours10 minutes
  • From Chengdu: 3 hours 40 minutes
  • From Kunming: 4 hours 10 minutes
There are regular flights from Delhi to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mumbai has air connections with Shanghai; and Bangaluru with Chengdu.

Otherroutes:
  • Kolkata-Kunming-Yinchuan-Urumqi. Flight duration: approximately 7hours, excluding interchange time/stopovers
  • Kathmandu-Chengdu-Urumqi
Note: Altay-Urumqi takes about an hour by air
 
G. Sichuan Province: Chengdu and its periphery
The home of giant pandas, Chengdu, the capital ofSichuan Province(the ‘Heavenly State’),is an exceptional winter destination. In the absence of northerly winds, the cold is hardly ever felt even in temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius. “The land of warm ice” is the epithet given to Sichuan.

Attractions:
  • Mount Emei, Jiuzhaigou Valley, Xiling Mountain, Wawu Mountain, Four Girl Mountain, Conch Gully, Icicles and Rime-icefalls
Getting there: Take the direct flight from Bangalore to Chengdu: 4 hours
H. Yunnan–Shangri-La and its periphery
The word ‘Yunnan’ translates into ‘the place south of the colourful clouds’. It is said, in Yunnan, the province in the southwest of China, “ice glows fromsunrise to sunset.” Glaciers, sacred snow-covered mountains and clear blue skies have made Yunnan one of the world’s great winter destinations.

Attractions:
  • The Meli Mountain in the northwest of the province has 13 peaks, each at an elevation of over 6,000 m; ice funnels and glaciers glowin the sunlight
  • Haba Mountain
  • Jade Dragon Mountain
  • Shangri-La Skiing Field
Getting there: The most convenient and shortest route is to fly to Lijiang via Kunming:40 minutes by air

From India:
  • Kolkata-Kunming: 2 hours
  • Bangalore-Chengdu: 4 hours, followed by Chengdu-Lijiang: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Delhi/Mumbai-Shanghai; Shanghai-Lijiang: 4 hours
